Australia withdraws 2026 World Championships. Ice Hockey Australia (IHA) has made the difficult decision to withdraw the Mightyroos, the Australian Men’s national team, from the IIHF World Championships Division 2A tournament for 2026.
Australia has been set to fly out and compete in the Division 2A tournament in Al Ain, UAE in mid-April 2026.
Reason Behind the Decision
IHA confirmed they had consulted with important stakeholders and decided the financial and security concerns were too great. Booking flights at short notice in and around the Middle East posed great expense and security concerns given the ongoing Iran war.
Unlike Ice hockey New Zealand, who are in a good financial position to enable them to pay for last minute flight changes for the New Zealand national team to avoid travelling through the Middle East. IHA are not in the same financial position at this time. They are beginning to recover from reported $377,000 financial losses from last financial year.
The Meeting
Australia, along with the other competing teams in Division 2A and representatives from International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) this past week held an emergency meeting to discuss the current situation and ways forward following the decision in mid-March to cancel Al Ain, UAE as the tournament host.
Will Division 2A be Completely Cancelled or Go Ahead?
Maybe. The competing nations and the IIHF have selected Georgia as an alternative emergency host for Division 2A in 2026. The tournament however may still be cancelled. The UAE Government needs to grant the UAE national team permission to fly to Georgia. If they grant is, the tournament will likely go ahead. If they don’t grant permission, the tournament will likely be cancelled. A decision either way is expected soon.
The IIHF has cancelled the Division 4 tournament this week. Kuwait would have been the host. This could be a sign for things to come for Division 2A.
Is This the First Time Australia has Withdrawn from Worlds?
No, it is not a common occurrence but not the first time. Australia withdrew from 2022 World Championship tournaments due to ongoing COVID-19 related issues. Issues included player wellbeing, travel restrictions in Australia and quarantine requirement risks.
Affects on the AIHL
The decision to withdraw has direct affects on the 2026 AIHL season. National team players for Australia will no longer have a disrupted beginning to the AIHL season, which kicks off in mid April 2026. Instead, AIHL teams will only miss their New Zealand internationals.
This does affect the ice time for youngsters in some of the AIHL teams as they will be competing against the normal Australian internationals for ice time in the early season games. However, everyone, including the fans, will get a better picture of the pecking order for Season 2026 far sooner this year compared to normal.
