In a season of turmoil, the Sydney Sirens face another battle in the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL). Macquarie Ice Rink renovations will not be complete in time for the Sirens opening games. Sending the Sirens on a search for a new home.
The AWIHL social media shared, “ Due to circumstances outside the league’s control, Macquarie Ice Rink is currently unavailable for hockey activities until after the AWIHL season has finished. AWIHL, the Sydney Sirens, and all visiting teams have moved quickly to secure alternative venues to ensure the Sirens’ home games could proceed with minimal disruption.”
“I am so proud of the girls and their resilience”, Head Coach Annelie Kvisle shared with Oz Hockey Media.
“We are obviously so disappointed about not being able to play at Macquarie Ice rink,” continued Kvisle, “given the significantly improved facilities, the girls were excited to be the first to play there.”
“Despite a number of setbacks with training ice and now moving our home games, I’m so proud of the team and staff for their ability to be so understanding, flexible and rise above the adversities.”
“We are so grateful to both Erina and Newcastle for accommodating us with ice time to ensure the Sirens’ season could continue on. Now, to put our focus on the remainder of the season!”
Updated Game Details:
6–7 December vs Adelaide Rush @ Erina Ice Arena
10–11 January vs Perth Inferno @ Hunter Ice Skating Stadium, Newcastle
31 January–1 February vs Melbourne Ducks @ Erina Ice Arena
7–8 February vs Melbourne Ice @ Erina Ice Arena
Unfortunately, the Sydney Sirens’ planned round against the Brisbane Lightning on the 13th & 14th December has been cancelled, with points split between the two teams. AWIHL confirmed that every conceivable option was explored, but despite exhausting all alternatives, the league could not find a viable path to reschedule the series. Shared the AWIHL on social media.
AWIHL Commissioner, Michaela Fellowes spoke with the AWIHL social media team sharing:
“I would like to extend a sincere thanks to all clubs involved for their cooperation and flexibility, and give particular recognition to the Sydney Sirens for their extensive work in reorganising logistics on extremely short notice.
We want to thank our players, fans, and partner venues for their understanding. This has been a major operational challenge, but the teams come together in a way that reflects the best of our sport.”
We encourage all Newcastle and Central Coast Hockey fans to get out and support the Sirens. The AWIHL is closer to your doorstep than ever before.
