Licari: ‘It was really daunting not knowing where to start’

Regarded as a trailblazer in Australian hockey. The journey for Ella Licari is a story of competing at the highest level while navigating through their gender identity.

Licari is the current Sydney Sirens goaltender in the Australia Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL), played for the Perth Thunder also, and represented Australia throughout a promising inline hockey career.

Recently, Licari sat down with Andrew Macdougall on the Pride & Puck Podcast to talk hockey career, transitioning, the emergence of queer hockey and much more.

“I guess it was really difficult thing when I was very early in in transition,” Licari told the Pride & Puck Podcast.

“And I decided that I wanted to play hockey at a high competitive level. And I didn’t really know where I would fit because I didn’t really see anyone else in my position playing at anything greater than club level.

“Having previously played very competitively it was something I wanted to return to, but it was really daunting not knowing where to start.

“Or who I could talk to about what my options were.”
